Call for papers: Sciences du design n°22, Design(s) du Sud/Sud(s) du Design – Towards a Design beyond Modernity

Call for Papers for Issue 22 of Sciences du Design, Coordinated by Barbara Szaniecki, Diego Landivar, and Francesca Cozzolino, Scheduled for Publication in December 2025.

This issue, titled “Design(s) from the South/South(s) of Design? Towards a Design Beyond Modernity”, aims to recentralize design thinking by incorporating perspectives and practices originating from the “Souths” or theoretical approaches situated in the North but inspired by knowledge and methods from Southern countries.

Objective and Theme

This editorial project seeks to explore design practices and methodologies that push beyond the boundaries of modernity, traditionally conceived in the Global North. By opening up this dialogue, SDD 22 aims to challenge and reinterpret the notion of “modernity” through the lens of diverse practices and research, particularly those grounded in the realities of the “Souths.” The expected contributions may offer unique perspectives and redefine the contours and paradigms of what constitutes a “design from the South.”

Who Can Participate?

This call is open to a wide range of researchers and practitioners from various fields of design (object design, graphic design, textile design, interactive design, etc.) who wish to contribute to the theoretical debate, present case studies, or submit critical and/or speculative texts. Diversity in contributions is highly encouraged, whether through rigorous academic research, innovative proposals, or reflections inspired by unique local contexts.

Submission Guidelines

Researchers and practitioners interested in this theme are invited to submit a proposal. Proposals, limited to 750 words, should be submitted via the online form available here by November 20, 2024.

Publication Guidelines

Selected contributions will be published in the December 2025 issue, providing a platform for voices in design that question and enrich contemporary practices by exploring alternative perspectives beyond classical modernity.

We encourage you to share your ideas, submit your proposals, and join this intellectual and creative journey.
