The second session of the seminar explores the tension between the proximity induced by immersive technologies and the analytical distance required to critique their content and form. Artist and filmmaker Nicolas Gourault joins us for a discussion based on his own work. In his film “VO”, made in 2021, he examines operative images produced by and for machines in order to question their fascination. “VO” takes the form of an experimental visual investigation based on a specific case study: that of the first fatal accident between a pedestrian and an autonomous car developed by the American company Uber, which occurred in 2018 in the United States. The investigation is based on testimonies put into visual form by the dramaturgical and immersive means of cinema. Elements from another project, in progress by Nicolas Gourault, will also be invited to fuel a collective discussion around the machine’s point of view and the notion of immersivity in contemporary media experience.
