From November 25 to 30, 2024, Rémi Sagot-Duvauroux will present his immersive installation The Hitchcock Experience at the prestigious Casablanca International Video Art Festival. This not-to-be-missed event in the artistic landscape showcases innovative video creations and emerging artists on the international scene.

Enter the space of one of the most famous and emblematic scenes in the history of cinema. That’s the challenge of this virtual reality experience, which plunges us into the airplane sequence in Alfred Hitchcock’s North By Northwest.

How do you inhabit a cinematic performance space? How can we adapt Hitchcock’s dramaturgy while allowing new phenomena to emerge that are specific to the immersive nature of virtual reality devices? How can we match the rhythm of the spectator’s body to that of a montage? And what form can this montage take, and for what aesthetic and dramaturgical effects? These are the issues guiding the research-creation project The Hitchcock Experience.

To answer these questions, Rémi Sagot-Duvauroux proposes the experience of editing guided by the immersant’s movements. It explores questions of distance and identification with the character by translating certain cinematographic shot scales into the scale of the immersant’s body in relation to the space represented. In addition, this experiment proposes a form of editing that adapts in real time to the movements of the immersed person’s body and gaze, creating a dialectic between narrative rhythm and the rhythm of lived space.
