Synopsis:
At a time when the production and circulation of images is accelerating exponentially, it’s wise to be wary of the narratives they are called upon to deliver. The rise of new imaginative technologies is also accompanied by a certain anxiety about the relationship between contemporary images and reality. Yet this widespread mistrust also carries the risk of dissolving the very conditions of collective apprehension of reality and facts: among deepfakes and other visual manipulations, there are still images that document what is really happening; indeed, without them, it would be impossible to agree on the reality of an event. (“Pics or it didn’t happen”).

The “Reality Check” research seminar invites a plurality of voices – philosophers, historians, filmmakers, artists, researchers, 3D modelers and fact-checkers – to examine the upheavals our collective relationships to images and reality are undergoing today. With a particular focus on the visual regimes emerging as a result of contemporary digital mediations, this seminar will seek to navigate the currents of images and data that feed our senses of reality, between immersion and submersion.
