Le Groupement de Recherche en Robotique (GDR) du CNRS et le Programme et équipement prioritaire de recherche (PEPR) “Robotique organique” avec son projet ciblé “Matériau, Architecture et Intelligence incarnée” et sa Maison des Humanités potentielles organisent, avec leur partenaire EnsadLab (laboratoire de l’École des Arts Décoratifs – Université PSL), deux journées consacrées à des projets et réflexions relatives aux croisements entre “soft robotics, arts et design”.

La “soft robotics” ou “robotique déformable” est devenue, en quelques années, un domaine de recherche en pleine expansion autant qu’un vecteur de création de plus en plus présent en art comme en design. Signes des temps : la plus grande conférence scientifique du domaine, Robosoft, vient de lancer un appel à projets pour une exposition d’art et de design, alors que l’artiste coréenne Mire Lee déploie, depuis octobre 2024, ses sculptures molles et animées dans le Turbine Hall de la Tate Modern. En France, depuis plusieurs années, quelques laboratoires scientifiques travaillent dans le domaine avec des artistes, designers ou architectes, à l’instar de CRIStAL à Lille, Femto-ST à Besançon ou PMMH à Paris, quand ce ne sont pas des laboratoires de recherche en art et design, comme EnsadLab, qui développent des projets avec de tels partenaires.
Cette nouvelle forme de robotique implique de repenser les rapports entre ces corps physiques souples mis en action, leur matérialité même, leur sensibilité et leur contrôle (relatif) et les nouvelles formes de relations, plus adaptatives, qu’ils peuvent entretenir avec leurs environnements. Nécessairement pluridisciplinaire, ce champ de recherche et de création participe d’un tournant matérialiste et, même, écologique. Il provoque de nombreuses réflexions, non seulement techno-scientifiques, mais aussi anthropologiques et philosophiques. Ces deux journées permettront, d’abord, d’offrir un bel éventail de pratiques actuelles, puis, dans un second temps, d’inscrire ces travaux dans une histoire récente autant que dans des pensées pluridisciplinaires fondamentales, actuelles et prospectives.
Première journée – 6 février
La première journée du 6 février sera l’occasion de présenter de nombreux projets à partir des principales disciplines concernées : robotique, sciences des matériaux, design et art.

La journée s’achèvera, en début de soirée, par une table ronde qui reviendra sur les implications pratiques et théoriques de ces projets. Seconde journée – 7 février
La seconde journée, du 7 février, sera davantage réflexive avec des interventions dans les domaines de la philosophie comme de l’histoire des sciences et de l’art, de la théorie du design ou de l’anthropologie, qui ouvriront de nouvelles perspectives sur la robotique souple et ses utilisations.
Cette journée est organisée par Samuel Bianchini et Rahma Khazam avec des interventions de Marinella Ferrara (théoricienne du design, Design Department, Politecnico di Milano), Emmanuel Grimaud (anthropologue, Lesc-CNRS, Univ. “Soft robotics” has rapidly become a burgeoning research field and a creative vector increasingly present in both art and design. A sign of the times: the largest scientific conference in the field, Robosoft, has just launched a call for projects for an art and design exhibition, while Korean artist Mire Lee has been showcasing her soft and animated sculptures at the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall since October 2024. In France, several scientific laboratories have been collaborating with artists, designers, and architects in this field for several years, such as CRIStAL in Lille, Femto-ST in Besançon, and PMMH in Paris, as well as art and design research labs like EnsadLab.
This new form of robotics requires rethinking the relationships between these flexible physical bodies in motion, their materiality, sensitivity, and (relative) control, as well as the new, more adaptive relationships they can establish with their environments. Necessarily multidisciplinary, this field of research and creation participates in a materialist, and even ecological, shift. It provokes numerous reflections, not only techno-scientific but also anthropological and philosophical. These two days will first present a wide range of current practices and, secondly, position these works within a recent history as well as within fundamental, contemporary, and prospective interdisciplinary thoughts.
